When it comes to heartburn, the battle of the sexes appears to be a draw.
New research in the Archives of Surgery indicates that men and women may experience the symptoms of heartburn or acid reflux very differently. Women in a study said they had more frequent and severe heartburn, and more of them were taking medication to deal with their condition. But when men were diagnosed, they were more likely to have physical evidence of reflux, like esophagitis, than women.
In other news, a series of research presented to the American College of Gastroenterology suggested that many people who are taking popular antacid medicines for acid reflux don’t actually need to be doing so.
People like antacids because they make them feel better, according to researchers, who added that Americans would rather take a pill than make dietary modifications. But overusing these medications can cut down on their benefits, as well as cause stomach and intestinal problems. In other words, even if your doctor recommends them, be sure to look at changing your diet, reducing your stress and taking other measures to keep that indigestion under control.
